NEOTANGO is the name for different contemporary musicians who are developping a new kind of tango based on the classical tango. In the 1980's the Argentine Tango was rediscovered in Europe and the USA and a thourough study was made by dancers and musicians on the characteristics of the Tango in the 1940's - 1960's. New orchestra's took over Pugliese's arrangements and dancers were strongly influenced by great teachers as Antonio Todaro and Pepito Avellaneda.
Now a new century has arrived, with new tango music. Gotan Project conquered the world with their senational 'La Revancha del Tango'. Important new groups are Bajofondo Tango Club, Tanguetto and curious musicians like the Austrian jazzplayer Preinfalk. Interesting compilations appear such as 'Lounge Tango', 'Piazzolla Remixed' and 'Electronic Tango'. International DJ's find inspirations in traditional tango's adding a loungey flavour to it with beats and samples.
NARCOTANGO
A special band in the Neotango landscape is NARCOTANGO, founded by Carlos Libedinsky. Familiar to Gotan Project he uses authentic instruments like bandoneon, guitar, violin and bass, but also electronic effects. This leads to an exiting blend of sensuous melodies and powerful beats that is loved by tango dancers today. Carlos comments:
"At the hour when there are only a few couples left on the dance floor, magic sneaks (or ‘creeps’?) into the milonga, and I watch people dancing and experimenting with a new kind of tango dance, when my body is exhausted from dancing for hours and I don't want the night to end, at that hour NARCOTANGO was born. It was then that I could imagine the music that I wanted to dance to, and to see others dance to. At that moment the narcotic power of tango takes over and confirms, once again, that I have entered a universe inside of me that is hard to leave, because like a drug, tango generates an incredible, sensual and powerful addiction."
Critics say about Narcotango: "They play a cross-over between Osvaldo Pugliese and Massive Attack, a clear synthesis of tradfitional tango and electronic music. Tango music for a new generation..."
In Holland NARCOTANGO performed in 2004 in Paradiso, Club Panama and Nighttown. Nowadays they perform a lot in the milonga's of Buenos Aires and issued their second cd in 2006. In April and May 2007 Narcotango have been touring in Germany, Italy, Greece, France, Portugal and The Netherlands.
